Session Title: Facilitating a Science Discourse Community
Description: Walk away with research-based instructional strategies and tools for how to facilitate a science discourse community in which all students engage with science practices and crosscutting reasoning to figure out complex phenomena.
Abstract: Engage with high-leverage science practices like scientific modeling and explaining to figure out relevant, phenomena-based questions. Crucial to engagement with science practices is the development of a discourse community that supports students’ scientific reasoning and communication beyond memorizing and reciting. By the end of this valuable workshop, teachers will walk away with research-based instructional strategies and tools for how to facilitate a science practices community in which all students are obliged to participate both socially and intellectually.
